Bank Holidays

Am I entitled to bank holidays off?

No. There is no statutory right for an employee to take a public holiday (bank holiday) as a day off – although if their site is closed they will usually not have to work.

Will I automatically get paid for bank holidays?

No. If you are off on bank holiday as your site is closed you must book this as a days holiday to ensure you get paid it. It will not automatically get added. This is because we work 365 days a year and rotas change, therefor we pay based on clocking times. Therefore all holiday regards if its BH or not will need to be booked.

Will i get paid Extra for bank holidays?

It’s a common myth that if a person works on a bank holiday they will get time-and-a-half or even double time. This is actually untrue.

There’s no statutory right to pay employees extra if they work bank or public holidays. Once again, if there are any occasions where an employee would be entitled to extra pay, it would have to be clearly outlined in a contract of employment.

Will I loose the bank holiday if I do not book for that day?

No you will not loose it. It will sit within your allowance ready to use in the year. Oftern employees that work bank holiday will just save it at a later point.
