Help Guide: Managing Work During a Train Strike

Train strikes can disrupt travel plans, but with preparation and support, we can minimise their impact on work. This guide explains the options available to cleaners during a train strike.

1. Plan Ahead

  • Check Strike Dates: Stay informed about upcoming strikes through train service websites, apps, or news updates.
  • Explore Alternatives: Look for other transport options, such as buses, carpooling, or walking.

2. Alternative Travel Options

  • Carpooling:

    • Arrange to share rides with colleagues who drive and live nearby.
    • Speak with your manager to see if the company can help connect staff for carpooling.
  • Buses and Coaches:

    • Check local bus schedules as they may have additional services during strikes.
  • Cycling or Walking:

    • If you live close to work, consider cycling or walking if possible.

3. Adjusted Schedules

  • Flexible Hours:
    • Speak with your manager about adjusting your start and finish times to work around available transport options.
    • For example, you could start earlier or later to avoid peak travel times or limited services.

4. Communicating with Your Manager

  • Notify Early:

    • If the train strike will affect your ability to get to work, inform your manager as soon as possible.
  • Stay in Contact:

    • Ensure your manager has your current phone number in case they need to contact you.

5. Continue to attend your shift

  • You have made a commitment to attend your shift. You will need to find a way to get to work and we will not accept absence for training or bus strikes.

Final Tips

  • Be Prepared: Pack essentials the day before, like your uniform, ID, or any chargers for phones as well as extra cash.
  • Stay Informed: Train strike plans can change—keep checking updates regularly.

By staying informed and communicating with your manager, we can work together to manage disruptions caused by train strikes. Thank you for your commitment and flexibility!
